The two failure modes of pixel diffing
Pure screenshot comparison fails in both directions. It over-alerts: anti-aliasing, font rendering, timestamps, and animated content light up diffs that mean nothing, training reviewers to click approve without looking. And it under-detects: a button pushed below the fold by a CSS change can produce a modest pixel delta while being a checkout-killing regression.
Compare structure, not just pixels
Element-drift detection reads the page the way the browser does: where elements are, how large they are, and how they relate. When an element moves, shrinks, or vanishes, that is a structural fact, reportable with the element's identity attached, not a heat-map blob. Paired with tolerant pixel comparison for appearance, you get alerts that name the element that moved and silence for the noise.
Our visual testing runs both layers and routes confirmed changes into a review flow, so "the header moved 40px on mobile" arrives as a decision to make, not a jigsaw to solve.
